When I changed to vB, I had to import over 9,000 pre-existing users from another BB program.
Because their passwords were already encrypted in the old program, I had to reset all of the passwords.
I created 2 small PHP scripts to do this:
1. To make the passwords unique, I used a substring of the username + a substring of the email address + their userid # (which mysql creates incrementally and no other user would know). I MD5'd the password and saved it to the coresponding user record.
Then I tested the logins of 5 random users. It worked! (Important: do this step before giving users their passwords!)
2. I then created a small script that would go thru the db, generate the password from my formula, and email the password each user. In the email, I encouraged each user to change their password upon returning.
It worked very well... if you want a copy of the scripts, e-mail me .
