How to add to QUICKLINKS?

I would use a plugin to eval the template hooks in the navbar template ($template_hook[navbar_quick_links_menu_pos1]).
There are 3 positions in 3.6.x and 4 in 3.7.x and create a new tempalte to contain your new quicklink menu item(s) and eval / fetch_templat all in the plugin.

I am trying to do the same thing and creating the plugin and hooks stuff as you mentioned is over my head. Is there a way to go to the Styles and Templates and .... to the navbar code and add something there or an easier way please?
