What is the variable for url

I've tried everything that I can think of and still can't get it to work, is there a variable for a url so I can have <a href="$variable[link]" this would be an external link, so far with using $forum I've only managed to get it to do www.mysite.com/www.test.com and not just www.test.com
Any help would be appricated, Thanks in advance
