There are many theories , one is so it would be called 'vB', since the original board was VB World (I think that's what it is called?). Another is, since it was meant to be a PHP version of UBB, they went up a letter from 'U' to 'V' and hence, 'vBulletin'.

I would have guessed at the "V" standing for virtual.

I believe they answered it in an interview once. It was Steve or Kier (Keir... ).

Anyhow, they were talking about how the website vbworld needed a database driven forum solution to replace their UBB, and since infopop (UBB creators) were working on the Oracle powered "Open Topic" they werent willing to release a PHP/MySQL UBB port at the time.

So vbworld created a PHP/MySQL port of UBB themselves, they got a lot of people asking for their port, so they cleaned it up, make it more generic and portable and released it to a small group as vBulletin (due to vbworld).

It grew popular and turned into what it is now.

I think thats correct... wanders off to sitepoint to check...

Yep, thats roughtly what they said.

Actually at some point a developer confirmed the theory of virtual Bulletin. If I'm not mistaken, I belive it was Kevin.
