Persons not that familiar with how viruses are snuck into emails

Dont open any rared or zipped items that look like this.

Some are trojans, some are worm viruses that your antivirus program most like wont detect, until it is too late..
They're circulating like crazy right now.

You can get a virus from unrarring / unzipping a file? I thought you had to run an executable.

yaa you do, but if someone was to unrar it, i would assume they would also run it..

DoS starting on February 1, 2004

Just want to add alot of the viruses are W32.Novarg.A@mm, which is a mass-mailing worm.

The worm is always an attachment with a file extension of .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.
Not included on the symantec site is the fact alot are being rared or zipped up first
The worm also contains functionality to perform as a proxy server. It listens on all TCP ports in the range 3127-3198.

        - Virus Payload -
The worm will perform a DoS starting on February 1, 2004. On February 12, 2004 the worm has a trigger date to stop spreading.

Unlike you, most people around here appeciate that Asendin takes his time to post articles on this forum to warn us / inform us about happening things.

I've receieved two emails in the last day and a half with a .zip file attached. Question - If I open the email, but dont download the .zip file, I'm still okay, correct?

                    Just want to make sure.

For the most part, yes. There was a problem with active scripting a while ago which ran a virus as soon as you opened the email. I got hit with that myself once and it deleted my entire inbox

If you've downloaded updates it should be ok now.

Always set your email client so it doesn't parse html code in emails.

                            currently at 78...and still counting.

It's only the spam email inbox that's getting hit so no worries

I just got 51 bounced messages today and loads of them said I've been sending out viruses. Anyone else get this? :\
