I need to know how to do one of the above in either WIndows XP or Knoppix. I need a FAT32 partition so I can save things in Linux, obviously, so Knoppix or whatever distro I use will be useful. I already tried to find out how to add a partition in XP but I couldn't find out how anywhere.
Adding a FAT32 partition or converting an NTFS partition to FAT32....

On something technically unrelated, when resizing my main NTFS partition, it errored out, b0rking Windows, which now no longer boots.
I can access the data using Knoppix, which naturally boots since it is on a CD.Comment

Boot using the XP CD, use the System Recovery Console, and try a fixmbr or fixboot
It sometimes works. *shrugs* Otherwise, its format/reinstall funtime.Comment

When I hear that "(Insert NT5 based OS Name) cant boot, what happen?" Its either
- NTOSKRNL
- NTLDR
- The MBR
- Disk Error (damaged, bad sectors...etc)

A fixmbr/fixboot will rarely work unless the MBR or bootsector where actually damaged. If created or moved around partitions, it most likely is NTOSKRNL error, in which a very simple fix which works in this case is to renumber the partitions in the boot.ini, since the bootloader cant find what partition XP sits on.
But like I said a more specific error message would be of more help. I could be something totally different, and there are many other things that could cause NT to fail, but the ones you mentioned tend to be the most common.Comment

It b0rks as in it restarts before it completes the boot, and it keeps doing it over and over.
I don't have an XP disc, otherwise I'd probably just format the damned drive and start over.
EDIT: It gets to the boot screen, but a few seconds after it first shows, it reboots itself.Last edited by Matthew Gordon; Wed 1 Oct '03, 3:24pm.Comment
