I posted this on forum-forum.com, and was looking for additional opinions as well.
I run the largest Dave Matthews Band fansite on the net, almost 30,000 members. We offer downloads of live shows via our site. Recently there has been an increase in use of Bit Torrent to spread some shows (BT is a quasi-P2P application - the more ppl downloading, the more bandwidth to go around). While BT isn't an option for our site due to security issues, other sites have picked up this option and continue to host these files. That's all well and good - but users from these sites are coming over to my site and spamming the forum, with links to the threads with the .torrent attachments. The kick is, once users try to click the attachment, they are prompted to register in order to download it. I have no problem with requiring registration, but the fact that users are posting links to the thread, and not just attaching the .torrent file, bothers me, and makes me consider this spam.
http://www.antsmarching.org/forum/s...&threadid=57568 That is a thread discussing this very issue. People don't seem to understand the logic I just stated. There seems to be a lot of competition in the online DMB community, and since we're the largest site, we seem to get hammered on the most, despite our intentions.
Am I correct in treating this as spam?
