    Overgrow:

Since you've got one of the biggest vBulletin boards, with the most people on at any given time, are there any tips or tricks you can give us to maximize vB on our servers?

    Thanks!

Yeah, those are standard, quid pro quo, did those when I set up PHP and MySQL kind of things...but he has on average during the day 1,000+ users online with zero lag....I want to know how he does that.

(Plus, he's got a lot of killer mods too...)

I think he runs 2 servers (my guess), don't quote me on that though. One server is the actual http server serving the website while the other is a total MySQL server.

Overgrow can correct me on this though (sorry if the above does not make much sense, very tired atm, need sleep ).

He's running MySQL 4, which really is an improvement, so make sure you're running that...and uhh, a fast server

Hey, I got my own thread.. keen.

                Necessary ingredients for speed:

                -mySQL 4 for query caching
-PHP Accelerator, takes literally 20 seconds to install
-stop users from searching the post table when dB load goes above a certain amount (I've written how to do this with multiple servers having the web server check the db server load-- in a post around here somewhere)

Things not everyone will be able to do:

-change most tables to InnoDB to prevent row-level locking
-use MyISAM on the post for boolean full text searches
                -eliminate the postindex table altogether
-have a db guru tweak their site and provide a new search.php
-buy new servers: dual-2.4 gig Xeon with 4 gigs RAM & 80 gig SCSI Raid recommended

I'll add to this as I think of things...

-static Forumjump with templates for different user access levels. Absolutely made huge improvements for me.
-if you have a large archive, ban the lame bots like Turnitin and ia_archiver from chewing your bandwidth
-if you have a large archive, make sure your chat areas are off limits to the bots or you will get tons of unwanted off-topic search engine placements. I rank very well for "christina agulera naked" and I'm #1 for "gay kid" on Google

Why were you searching google for gay kids?

LOL, I'm gonna kick you in da teef

I saw it in my referral logs. I see it a lot in my referral logs. Here are some other tasty tidbits I get hits for:

                        "f***ing dogs"
                        "boys with no pubic hair"
                        "wet girls"

BELIEVE ME, this is not what my site is about-- but beware of your search engine optimization on your archive because you might start getting hits for keyword combinations you never expect. My users say "wet" a lot and they refer to their plants as "girls".... baaaaad combination. Also general off-topic conversation (like a discussion on hair trimming) has led to tons of these unwanted incoming visitors.

Isn't it funny what you find in your referral logs! My favorite, someone searched for:

"Please help me for the love of god why won't you help!!!!" or something like that, and I got the hit. heh.

I get an obscene amount of referrals for "disney porn" not sure how that happened.
