Wow sounds very efficient. Does it have a restoring option in the ACP?

restore database? no, just run queries and the normal backup, but i would still use ssh for backup to be safe

PHP runs as "www". So far I haven't seen anyone come up with a way to give PHP the necessary permissions to do a restore with mysql.

Can't it just exec the mysql process, logging in with the proper rights?

You really want to use telnet to restore MySQL dump files. I remember reading somewhere that phpmyadmin could restore backup files, but I doubt it's as reliable as telnet.

What situation would someone be in that they can't Telnet or SSH in?

And if such a situation existed, I'd be uncomfortable running anything more complicated than a web server on it.

Considering webhosts are $7 a month...

That's a bad situation. Try to find a host that gives you telnet access.

If you don't have telnet access, and you need to restore a MySQL dump file, try asking the host to restore it for you.

Actually, I did just think of a situation. 200MB webhost, you have 180mb of stuff on there. Forum backup is 30MB. That's a problem!

No host in their right mind about security gives telnet - ssh works the smae way but much much more secure .

AS far as web based restore function, is feasible (an dis availible in phpmyadmin) but it is unreliable since restoring a backup takes time - and php tends to timeout after 30 seconds.

Getting SSH configured and set up for each user seems to be beyond the capability of my webhost. They want a driver's license number or some such nonsense.

PHPMyAdmin is not nearly as reliable, especially for larger databases, becuase it tends to time out as expected, so yeah telnet is the best way for sure.
