512mb pc2100 DDR ..... I think 256 is bare minimum, not 512. My friend has 256mb and his machine flies, and he runs like tons of programs at once. I don't see why 1GB is neccisary, maybe if you run tons of programs, but me personally, I got like 10 programs open (aim, icq, zone alarm, photoshop, kazaa, outlook, msn, 6 browsers, chat bot) and my comp is pretty fast...

Those programs don't use that much memory. I use Trillian on Windows and Gaim on Linux to use all four using just one program (helps a bit on resources).

CompUSA has these deals sometimes called shopping for free...I love that, I get money back from rebates a month after I buy it..

Lightwave is nowhere near that expensive, as a matter of fact. We have 18 fully licenced seats here, plus a render farm of > 200 CPUs.

Boxen? Someone's going all German on us...

I have several Sun machines here, but I can't say that they really offer anything more than a highly-specced Intel machine running Linux or BSD, of which we also have a lot...

German? Nah just better than 'boxes'

A Sun box is not really a Sun box unless it has 8+ CPUs on it
