    Serious Question: ubb.threads vs. vbulletin

    Hi,

I'm using ubb.classic (formerly known as UBB) for more than 3 years and want to switch to a MySQL-based board.

Beside the price (vb=160$, ubb.t=229$) - what are the pros and cons of the two boards?

Please no flames against one or the other software - I just need a help for my decision.

    Thank you very much.

No offense but you can't expect a pure honest answer (consciously or unconsciously) on a support board for one of the two.

That's why I said "Serious". I think some people have experience with both of the boards and could give me a push to one of the two.

I'm tending to vBulletin, because some features of ubb.threads would be "too much" for my members (eg switching between flat and threaded view, answering directly to one post in a thread instead of the whole thread).

I've read a few things about vB 3 and this pushes me a few steps more to vB - but I couldn't find a release-date, and the actual version has one really strange feature: if you subscribe to a thread you will get email-notification too, this seems kind of "unnatural" (I know this will be an option in vb 3, not a "must" anymore).

DISCLAIMER - I'm not bashing UBB.Threads in any way

Well last week I got a copy of UBBThreads for testing on my 127.0.0.1 server and from the start things looked bad. The installer wasn't as good as vBulletin it just looked messy compared to vBulletins one.

Then there was the path problem. I installed it but I couldn't use it until I had manually edited the paths in the config file.

Now to the GUI. If you want to see he GUI for yourself go to http://www.ubbcentral.com and look for some link to their demo board. Looks OK right? Wait until you see the admin panel! It lacked so many features and was as plain as the installer.

But at the end of the day its up to you

vBulletin is just way better, vB1 was, vB2 is, and vB3 will crush them all.

You may get pure honest answers, but they will all probably be pro-vB. The reason being that all vBs customers have chosen vB over all the other forum software, and that is why they are probably posting here.

BTW, buy vB - its great

The thing that freaks me out is anyone can make their on vBulletin and it will be just as great as the guy next to you who has vBulletin.

Sure - but for most people it's just too time-consuming building their own vB.

Yea, I wanted to see how much hacks for 6.0 there were....Not many

And that shows how small the member base is

Thats no fair statement. Thats just because most of the people are using UBB.classic (for the moment). And the dev-community of UBB.classic is really huge.

Besides: If you need a lot of hacks, doesn't that mean the software you are using is missing a lot of features?

Nevertheless: I think I will switch to vB.

Hmm good point. However I'm sure you've made the right decision by switching to vB

vb3 will have that option as well...

                              The operarative word being "option"
