        thx.

        the best thing you can do to get new members is to offer content on your site that is unique. people won't come just for forums, your site needs content. that's why my site isn't very busy right now, i'm all forums.

            @forumz run pretty successfully.
            So does ascifi.com.

            You just need to find a way to get visitors to come to your site. Basically you need to offer something unique - which tends to be content on the main page.

                I started my forum in 1995. I had been a regular poster on the sci.med.vision newsgroup and when I started OptiBoard I just put a link to it in my sig. That's the only 'advertisement' I've ever done. I now have the largest forum in the world for eyecare professionals

                        My forum has been up since last November, seemed to take off pretty well, lot of people signed up right away, then I closed the board in January cause I was going into the hospital, was in there for about 4 months, reopened it and now my board has lost it's momentum, and most the ones who did sign up never came back even after I sent out a mass email informing them I was reopened.

                        That coupled with the fact that my boards main focus is 3d graphics, Bryce mainly and there are hundreds of graphic forums out there as well as most graphic artists spend most of their time working on graphics not posting on message boards has had a negative effect on my sites growth.

                        I have tried adding a health section, and some other areas for the casual user and I hope it works.

                        Me thinks I might try the newsgroup thing as well..

                          hehe, newsgroups are good sources for members.
                          i wish i had some great hint to share with you about how we got our member base, but really.. that just kind of happens when you combine the forums for four blizzard fansites and create a big community.

                          i've always found newsgroups and other related websites to be good places to inadvertently advertise your forums.
