If so, how did it die? Did you have to keep your foot on the pedal constantly, and you let it off? Something else?

I help run a forum whos main interest is based on info for a holiday island. This time of year is terribly slow obviously and I struggle to keep interest going. However, I have found that introducing some type of "recognise from the clue" game, for restaurants etc. does keep the regulars popping back in and viewing stats have risen. Its all about having something new in order to retain interest until the questions start up again!Comment

Yeah, my board died recently, and with a staff of 2 administrators, including me, and one active member who has zero posts, we're trying to recuperate. We made less posts due the chatbox being too popular, and at the end, members were getting bored of it. While we, the administrators, were thinking of plans to make them want to post again, one member just stole all our members out the chat to his site, being convinced it would do way better. His site fell apart yesterday.
What I think what was the cause of my community dying, is the fact that I started to late on getting our members back motivated to post rather then chatting in the chatbox, and thus gave our members to opportunity to advertise their site in the chatbox due members getting bored of my site because they weren't motivated to post. As you can see now, it happened and one of our members did take action and stole our members. (And failed himself)
I currently own a phpBB 3.0.10 board. Still looking for some extra staff. PM me if you're interested, I won't post a link in the topic (due that may be considered as advertising) but I can tell you the subject of the community which is Nintendo gaming.Comment

It's like a roller-coaster for us. Some days the only posts are from the rss feeds. But our page views and visits steadily increase. We're planning some contests and restructuring our permissions for next month to see if we can increase things.Comment

Facebook has distracted and dispersed a lot of my members but I expect them to return when they become sick of it like I have.Comment

I had a nice forum back in the early 2000s that had a lot of competition from other boards. The things that helped kill my forum was people would come over from those other boards and sign up and post all sorts of bad things. One time, they even posted something that ran in an iframe so that it wasn't visible but every time someone came to my main page, it would load my forum in this iframe (I think that's what it's called) over and over again slowing my board down to where it was unusable creating a page can't be found message. I just got tired of it and closed it up.
I tried a few other things over the years and finally gave up trying to run a site about 5-6 years ago. I still own one domain name that I won't let go that other forums still call themselves as, they just have domains completely different.
I just come here to read up every few months or years. Surprised my login still works.Comment
