How important are smilies

I try to provide a huge array of smilies (emoticons) and skins for my members and am curious if any of you care or consider this as vital a part of the forum experience as I do.

I've added quite a few smilies to my site because of user requests. They like them! One smilie can paint a thousand words.

Vital is a bit too strong but they really are very important. It gives a familiarity to the site and I think that forum users have come to expect them, they are no longer something that is a cool addition but are now conspicuous by their abscence.

On my website there are many members from many different countries. Smilies help communications, as sometimes plain text without them can be misunderstood. I apologize for the strong wording.

vb standard smilies aqre quite plain and boring, luckily it is quite easy to upload more if you save them to your computer.
