Properly tuned CentOS can do just as well But yes out of the box Debian would have average less memory usage at least.

Properly tuned Debian also out preforms a properly tuned Cent OS.

May i ask approximatively how much is the running cost of that configuration and if you can balance that with the revenue of your community?

Is just an idea of what i should do when i'm going to reach that number too, actually i have about 34 k par month tha is not bad, but are crumbs compared to yours.

and also... my share host is going to explode if i do not change soon !!!

Yes, I can balance it with subscriptions & donations, without advertisements. But its tight and needs effort. The hosting company does send 5 figure bills now and then. I use a costly datacenter, which has a lot of benefit. And I have a good SLA, which is costly as well. I do not use a CDN, so that page load stays low. I spend a lot on coding as well. I hope to receive €36.000 in donations this year.

I've went from shared hosting to 2nd hand low end dedicated server, to high end server, to adding a backup server, then adding a replication server, to replacing the old high end server for modern hardware with visualization, then moving from apache to Litespeed. This all from 2002 - 2012.

I do not use advertising at all. I know that some are using adsense, but the rate from adsense is just insanely low. Consider that adds are basically links that direct your users away from your site and distract from your content.In other words they make your site less appealing and reduce traffic. So there is a choice between increasing traffic and increasing income. I choose traffic over income, for as long as I can. If I would need to start placing adds, I would only place premium priced adds.

And Debian could maybe help lower some of that cost for you (resources often add into money. lowering it can also lower operating cost).

We are now at 3 million unique monthly visitors.

We have also broken another record, as we now have 200.000 members. I have pruned over 70.000 inactive accounts over time, the last userid is a lot higher. Still using vbulletin 3. We will not be using vb4 nor vb5.
