    Sinecure and PHP <? Friends ?>

    Well, like many of you, I thought I was only a graphics guru. I felt my presence here and in the community was limited to graphics and html. Well I bought 2 books oh PHP and have started learning. That was about a week ago

    I've seen the light and I am full bore into PHP now, actually producing code for my own services site, soon to be launched YAY!!

    I bought that book by Kevin Yank, advertised in Wlukes sig. Great book, I must say, I've learned a lot about php/mysql connectivity. Expect to see me producing hacks, and support for php/mysql as well

    w00t, I am so happy

    Sitepoint.com/books, a great place

      I kept saying to myself I want to learn php. But that was over a year ago. I'm such a procrastinator.
      Well, there it is.

            PHP is probably the easiest web language to learn out there, it is fairly intiuitive with its 2400+ built in functions and C/Perl/shell scripting language similiarities. I suggest you learn Perl (CGI and for applications) as well so that you can get a breadth of knowledge to know what projects require what, it will make you a much more powerful web developer.

                    I bought that book as well. I find it doesn't get to the point, but rather goes on explaining to much, stuff I don't care about. THe book from sitepoint.com is straight to the point and teaches me what I want to know

                          Of course, you always have the best free resources....the Internet:

                          www.php.net (those user comments on the manual are a real help)
                          www.tek-tips.com (best technical community out there)
                          www.mysql.com (this should be obvious, and very indepth user commented online manual)
                          newsgroups/tutorial sites.

                          <bragging>
                          I know A LOT of PHP, enough to make educated decisions on when to use it and not. I learned all I know about PHP from looking at other peoples code, online tutorials, and the PHP manual. I've never purchased a PHP book in my life. Granted, I knew Perl really well before I started any PHP and that probably helped, but I think its possible to learn PHP without having to spend any money.
                          </braggin>

                          Hope this helps,
                          -Vic

                            I own Kevin Yank's book and it is a very good book, i agree totally. Yet the only problem is that it doesnt teach EVERYTHING you need to know so i'd a suggest a larger book that would explain things more in depth.

                            Some books i suggest are (w/ amazon link):

                            PHP and MySQL Web Development - by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson

                            and

                            Beginning PHP4 - by Wrox Press

                            and hey! you can buy them both for $62.98(if you buy them at the same time). Which is a really good deal considering i paid about $105 for both.

                              Yes, you could use the internet, but its tedious to be switching in between windows, etc. Its much easier to have the book for reference. I have another book on the PHP end of things, so that will take care of the hardcore PHP, while kevins book teaches me how to intergrate the two.
