I've used it before, and it's a very nice freeware solution. Some of the earliest releases actually used stock vB code, but that was a long time ago. I'd say it's probably my favorite freeware solution, although on a feature-by-feature comparison, it's about equal to both phpBB 3 and SMF.Comment

MyBB is indeed excellent these days and is now entirely unique code (and has been for years).
It runs some very successful sites and it's a good alternative to vB if you can't afford vB!MARK.B

Closest rivals in terms of what? Market share or quality?
In terms of market share, if you take a look at some statistics, it seems IPB and phpBB are the closest rivals.
It seems most people in this thread are discussing quality, which is a little more difficult to analyze due to the lack of hard statistical data, but from my experience I think IPB and vBulletin are closest in this category.Comment
