Some months ago i said this too, but it's never too late to invest time/money in other things, if you're not happy with the current product!
The longer you wait, it will become more complicated....

        Good features.
        Simple.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

Well, depends what version of vBulletin.

Most forums I frequent are running on vB 3.x. None have any intention of upgrading to vB 4.x in the immediate future.

Until recently I had not heard about MyBB, but recently more and more people post positively about it. What do people think about MyBB? It looks very similar to vb3 to me.

I've used it before, and it's a very nice freeware solution. Some of the earliest releases actually used stock vB code, but that was a long time ago. I'd say it's probably my favorite freeware solution, although on a feature-by-feature comparison, it's about equal to both phpBB 3 and SMF.

MyBB is indeed excellent these days and is now entirely unique code (and has been for years).

It runs some very successful sites and it's a good alternative to vB if you can't afford vB!

Closest rivals in terms of what? Market share or quality?

In terms of market share, if you take a look at some statistics, it seems IPB and phpBB are the closest rivals.

It seems most people in this thread are discussing quality, which is a little more difficult to analyze due to the lack of hard statistical data, but from my experience I think IPB and vBulletin are closest in this category.

IMO, the joomla forum components will be a rival for vbulletin soon. Or should I say joomla and the forum components will rival vbulletin suite.

                              What do you guys think?

                                Think it's XenForo and IP.Board.
