Computer Chat cannot log into facebook-twitter etc...

    Help computer literate folks
for the last month using my laptop i cannot log inot many site sincluding facebook, twitter or download i tunes.
in firefox i get this message

    Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at login.facebook.com.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Chrome and IE give similar error messages.
I know its not the network because desktop PC works fine through the same wireless network and modem.

    Any thoughts or better solutions.

sounds like your phone line needs to be fixed up where the modem is. Check your modem as you may have to buy a new one but get your phone line fixed up.
I had the same problem right from the start. I moved house and found that the phone line was dodgey, had the tech out 3 times and had the phone line fixed. However, the second adapter that has the modem on it needed to be fixed up. It is now fixed up and I am not having any problems.

What if you don't have a phone line?

Then check your computer and the modem that you are using.

Open an Administrative Command Prompt on your computer... (right click the shortcut and select run as "Run as Administrator")
Once at the command prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns"
This will get rid of all DNS settings from you local PC and refresh them from your provider. This will usually fix problems when you're not able to access a small subset of sites.

If it were problems with your modem or phone/cable line, then it would probably universally cut off your access at times.
