Chat: What is better a Java type or PHP/MySQL type of chat?

Wich one would have the less impact on my server, uses less memory, etc...

I know it could depend on many factors, but for discussion purposes, what type is technically better

Really depends on the architecture of the two systems. How is the Java Client communicating to the server? How are messages getting sent to other clients? Is it sitting on top of IRC? On the PHP/MySQL side, what is the AJAX/JSON tuning like? How many requests does it make per second? What is the MySQL tuning like?
