Help please. I would like to set a community up using vBulletin

    Hello Everyone,

I am new here and would very much appreciate some help.

I am a member of a forum that uses vBulletin 4 so know a little from a user point of view.

What I want to do now is to start my own little community using vBulletin 4.

I am starting completely from scratch and I know nothing about setting a community up.

Please could someone advise me as to what I need in order to set a community up and where to get it. Basic steps would be appreciated so I don't get too confused.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

    Domain name from "Namecheap"
    Host: HostGator
    Ftp client: FileZilla

    Download and install phpBB

Inviting a few friends:Play with it.

Do you like it but it's not good enough?
    You can buy vB4.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

I wouldn't recommend using HostGator. Consider using A Small Orange.

OK, coz I'm a total numpty I would like to check ...

        1) I need a host
        2) I need an ftp client (e.g. FileZilla) (where from? / is it free?)
        3) I need phpBB (where from? / is it free?)
        4) I need MSSQL? (where from? / is it free?)
        5) I need VB4/5

All the above need to be installed on the host? Am I likely to have to install them or will the host do it?

Any updates that are required, can I do these or will the host?

Once installed, what about backing up my system/data? Am I likely to be responsible for this or will the host do it?

What about a test system where I can try changes out before putting them live. Is it practical to/can I set one up on my own PC? Would I need to pay for additional licences for the software to be able to do this?

Are there any other questions I need to be asking?

Sorry if my questions sound silly but as I said, I am starting from scratch with absolutely no knowledge of what to do. Although I do know what I want!

If anyone would like to draw a basic diagram of a typical setup it may make things easier for me to follow.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Sorry, please scrub number (3) from my last post. That appears to be different forum software. I would like a vB4/5 community.

            It's free. http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/

            4) I need MSSQL? (where from? / is it free?)
            Your host must have it.

            5) I need VB4/5

Some of them would install it.

Any updates that are required, can I do these or will the host?
You have to do it or your host will charge a considerable amount for it.

Once installed, what about backing up my system/data? Am I likely to be responsible for this or will the host do it?
Your responsibility. Hosts do that but many of them would charge you for replacing your files-database with the backups.

What about a test system where I can try changes out before putting them live. Is it practical to/can I set one up on my own PC? Would I need to pay for additional licences for the software to be able to do this?
            Yes,you can do that.

After you get it install with a host. Updates aren't that hard. There is a Manual for 3.8. You can use that to figure out how to update. There is a lot of work involved in setting up a forum. You may want To pay for someone to set it up. When picking a host make sure they can fill these requirements.

Thank you ever so much everyone for your advice. Yes, I have nothing and know very little so am starting completely from scratch.

This thread is my launching point and I really appreciate the advice you have given. I am now in reading mode and am looking into various options.

I am sure that I will be back for more help.

                    Many thanks again,

                    Pickering

I was in the same position you are now not too long ago.

I should have let urljet.com set me up but did not know about them. Not super cheap compared to other hosts but they will setup vb and help you, and saves much time.

Off-topic, by why the HostGator hatred?
s.molinari - I would like to ask all customers to definitely feedback issues with the software and be specific with the issues, but to basically suck-up what happened in the past and try to just look forward.

Thank you for your suggestion Abomination. I'm currently having a look at urljet along with HostGator (as suggested by beishe8) and a number of others I've come across (some via this link http://www.thetop10bestwebhosting.com/ukg).

I've never used a host in my life but am beginning to get an idea of what Hosters are offering now.

We started with Hostgator, they were ok. Just to be clear, it is my understanding that urljet will install vb, and supported plugins, and if needed even sign up as an admin on your forums to help. A "one stop" vb shop. No other host I know of offers those services. vb.com will install a 'stock' vb.com installation for $150, but that is it.

The actual installation of vb is not that difficult compared to figuring out the domain name registrars, name servers, creating my sql data bases, etc. All of that is really easy, once you learn it, but it was daunting for me.

There are two things nobody has mentioned yet:

                              1) vBulletin is not free - you have to pay for it.
                              2) vBulletin is not free - you have to pay for it.

I realise that's technically only one thing, but it's such an important one I thought I'd mention it twice.
