I don't know how you can come to that conclusion myself. FaceBook has grown, and grown, and grown - and is still growing. While forums have just declined since. That speaks for itself, that more people are turning towards using FaceBook than forums for chatting. And it is taking away activity from communities.
If that wasn't the case, why are IPB and vBulletin creating FaceBook API login mods to try and capture facebook users now? They know like the rest of us that's where everybody is going, and the prime place to try and capture some members from.
Facebook might well be a simple "NotePad" compared to Forum software, but it seems that's what people just prefer now a days. Much the same way Twitter is just a "Scrap Piece" of writing paper compared to forums, but it's still doesn't stop it being as popular as hell.
If you were signing up to a site, would you rather have to go through a long sign up procedure, or just click a couple of buttons?Gaming Love - A community site dedicated to Eskil Steenberg's video game, Love.

Yeah, making it easier to login so you can try and tempt Facebook users over into using your forum also. There's "no conspiracy" theory about anything here, even IPB Developers have openly posted that's the main reason for it's use on the IPB boards to help boost your forum membership.Comment

You will never get rid of forums... FaceBook have a unique audience, they don't cater specifics well... they cater socialising well, not topical conversation.Comment

"Don't Give It Away
While many people spend days and weeks building their profiles and their network of friends and follower lists on Facebook and Twitter, power users recommend that you don't put all your eggs in one basket. It's better, instead, to make sure you have a presence on various popular networks and make sure most of your effort still goes into your own site."-----------------------------------------------------------

I have been trying desperately to get my forum off the ground for a few years, and it seems nearly impossible and almost pointless. I think Facebook is too powerful and I continually wonder if there's any point in continuing the efforts.
Even forums I used to visit years ago, that were doing really well, aren't doing so well, and I think it's because Facebook has everyone on it and it offers so much easy interaction.
Anyone else having extreme difficulties? Advice? Support?
Sorry to be negative here but there are a lot of cyberbullies on there who set you up or target you and they are just plain stupid.
Possibly best to if you have to have a page get a page for your forum and make it that you are the only one who can post things on it.Aussiefootyforums

Also keep in mind, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Eventually, FB will outlive it's popularity and excitement, then people will want to find things that aren't so FBish. Start reeling them in now, so they have a place to go.Comment

Facebook meets the demand that internet users have now. vbulletin is trying to meet the demands its users had 6 years ago.
Of course facebook hurts forums in this respect. But that says more about vbulletin, than about facebook.I buy 420 forums

And saying LOL about it. Well actually, that probably why most young ones use FB the most. It's a well known tapping-off shop.Last edited by MRGTB; Sat 15 May '10, 5:37pm.Comment

FB has hit the forums market but not killed it. The discussion forums on FB haven't been popular imo. But it has sucked traffic away from us. Proxies and spammers have done just as much damage.Comment

FaceBook is becoming more of an issue now with massive drops in numbers. People being lured and killed via dummy FaceBook accounts, privacy concerns, massive computer attacks via FaceBook videos and software, the list just goes on. Millions around the world are closing up shop on FaceBook.Comment

I've seen a lot of people banging on about how they're leaving facebook, joining "the flood" of other people are also getting off the boat. But guess what? All of them are still on there. I'll agree that some social chatting which used to happen on forums may have moved to facebook, but how big is the loss? How many people on your facebook friends list are people from forums?
Facebook is the jack of all trades and master of none. People enjoy being a part of clubs, or close knit groups of people who share a common interest. The same goes for online - it is pretty much impossible for facebook to take the place of specialized forums because it doesn't deliver the same experience.
Let's say I was really into Anime - like one of the guys above. Would I rather be 'a fan' of Anime on facebook, along with 395,000 other people I don't know. Or would I rather join an anime forum which caters more to me - partake in meaningful discussions and even make some friends? I feel you can't do that properly on facebook.. and I suggest the forums which are thinning out are ones we could do without anyway...Comment
