ArsTechnica did the same thing for their OpenTopic forums. So they limited a few forums like the Lounge and Velvet Room for subscription only. You can view the forums, just cant post if you dont have a subscription. Also with subscription you can have a custom user title, HTML posting abilties and access to a PDF technical library etc but thats about it. Other than that, everything else is the same for regular members.

I wish there was a way to integrate this into vB, it could be a handy feature. I myself am a regular user of AnandTech and am pissed what they did with the subscriptions... But, I guess Anand was loosing money from the crappy advertising payouts etc. Only works if you have REALLY dedicated members, etc.

I still also wish there was a way to inegrate the users, etc between different forums...

I subscribe to Ars technicas forum (I post as LamoTheKid).

I love it there, been there for over a year, great community they have going. The subscriptions went to 3000 I think by now. we figure we have such a great community that we might as well take this chance to help support it.

Anyone else here post at Ars?

Dedicated Server Access with improved performance (significantly more bandwidth offered to subscribers for faster access)
How do you think they are pulling this off?

have 3 servers, one for mysql two for apache. limit one of the apache servers to a certain kbs limit, limit the other one to a higher kbs limit.

nor does mine, i just add a field into the user database and in global.php do a check on that value and show a different header depending upon the value.

Yes that I understand...but how do you set it up so that the forums know which usergroup uses which server?

I have to think about that one.... *burn*

The other server has a different URL - and it's set to only allow a certain user group to access. Just a minor code change there.

Anandtech have about 10-12 servers if I remember correctly, so this 'special' forum might be running off 2 or more servers to make it even faster.
