    Trying to get started

I want to start a forum.

There's too much information here to know where to start.

Can someone please point me in the right direction.

    I'm flying blind.

    Thank you,
    The Alchemist

If you want to start a forum then firstly you need to think about what you want to make your forum about, I.E. Racing, News, Gaming, Discussions, Social etc.

Then you need the following 3 things:

      - Domain name
      - Forum Software (vBulletin, PHPBB, SMF etc)
      - Web Hosting (Make sure it fit's minimum requirements, most do)

After that, you would need to start to add as much content as you can to your board, and customise the theme so it looks good and unique to your board, but your main worry should be content, no content = no users = bad forum.

Also, if you plan to do this alone you will need knowledge of how vBulletin works, and how to configure everything. Once you have everything configured, I would highly advise setting up a few user accounts in each usergroup to test the permissions work correctly.
      Jut a random internet person.

A message to all illegal users!

        Thanks!

I'm hoping to start a forum about nothing. It will be entitled the 'Seinfeld Forum'. But, if I can't fill it with nothing, I will try and recruit friends to add meaningless crap to pad it out.

Thanks for the first steps and link, will follow the clues to see which buttons to push next.

I hope I can make a site out of it eventually.

        Cheers, TA

Sounds good already... nothing like experience to lead the way. Learn from others... but ultimately only hands on experience will tell whether its a winner or not.
