Windows 7 RTM begins rollout August 6th

Windows 7 would be officially hitting RTM status some time this month, but as to when we'd be able to get our hands on it, turns out that's a very tricky question.

According to the official Windows blog, OEMs will be able to get it approximately two days after the OS goes RTM, and beta testers who are already subscribed to TechNet can download RTM shortly after it happens for free.

Independent software and hardware vendors can download via Microsoft Connect / MSDN on August 6th. Same goes for MSDN-subscribed developers and IT Professionals with a TechNet account, but only the English language version.

It is the Final released product, given to Manufacturers, and OEM's such as Dell and Gateway, to begin to test and put on their systems for sale when they have done testing all hardware with the Final RTM product..

The RTM final code of Windows 7 is also sold as a Retail product in stores, and will be on October 22nd..

RTM - Means "Release to Manufacturing"... Final - Signed off from RC stage....

Not all products and companies have and use an RC "Release Candidate" stage..

That is not my DVD, I don't even use the Windows 7 DVD's I get because I have it downloaded from Connect, or Internally weeks before receiving it ..

Also I don't know who took that pic, but I sure hope it was from a MSDN user, or he just violated his NDA..

If OEMs are able to get Win7 two days after it hits RTM (which appears to have been two days ago, July 22,) does that mean that someone could buy a brand new PC in early August and have it shipped with Windows 7 already?

I'm not sure why OEMs and everyone else gets the RTM early if it seemingly can't even be used until October 22.

Computers won't ship with Windows 7 until October 22. Manufactures need the few months to test drives for hardware etc so they can ship working machines with Windows 7 come mid October.
