    Computer Chat Which Antivirus?

    Hi,

I am currently using Windows OneCare for my antivirus software but Microsoft are going to be discontinuing it in June 2009, So I will be looking for some new software.

Could anyone recommend any good ones - I am looking at this one but no idea if its any good.

    Link : ESET Smart Security

    Thankyou

Microsoft is replacing OneCare with a no cost tool code-named Morro. If you like OneCare than upgrade to it and you don't have to worry about the current annual subscription fees. Morro should do pretty much everything that OneCare does now.

Eset makes a great anti virus tool. I recommend it. I used it for a long time. But since my work has Symantic Antivirus 10, I have to use that on my laptops.

I use Norton Antivirus myself. I know there are others out there but this one was available to me so I used it.

I stopped running anti virus software on my systems since 2004, I really got tired of having a good setup and it being slowed down by the potential of getting infected. I changed my behavior and dont accept html emails anymore, only plain text, and I don't accept emails I didn't ask for. And I don't ever click on links in emails, or accept files from ppl i didn't ask for. I follow links by going to my bookmarks and I know those are right. It's a small change, but haven't been infected since. oh, and I stopped using microsoft outlook, because even without reading an email, just accepting it into the inbox was a potential infection. I moved to thunderbird until I got the mac in 2005 (december) and switched to mail.app. Also .. my router is my firewall, but my macs have their own firewall. This stops .. a lot. Everything else .. no anti virus, etc. Not for me anymore. I just make sure i have a backup of personal data, that's up to date. And if there's an issue, I just re-install fresh and restore to backup and continue. Never used it since 2004.

Ugh.. Tried AVG Free for a while and it was the worst application ever. It used way too many resources for an anti-virus program. 3-4 times as many resources as McAfee, which is also a resource hog. Now granted, AVG only used 5% of the CPU constantly but that is way too much for a service running in the background.

I'm glad Floris said what he said. I haven't used anti-virus software for years and I have no problems--it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I stopped when I took up music making with my computer because running anything in the background is death for recording music. Since then I just run the usual free anti-spyware stuff now and then and pretty much practice the same things Floris mentioned.
