This is pretty shocking and disturbing. Im sure the US is already doing this but come on... Is there no such thing as privacy anymore?
UK archiving every email?

What concerns me is how I keep finding the IP 11.11.1.1 in my network logs. I really could do without the DoD probing my network on a daily basis. Im guessing those of us in the US who visit sites or email people in the UK will also be logged and identified? Does that not breach our privacy laws?
I looked up PGP. That may help with certain data but not logs or identity on the ISP end.Comment

UK isps have been keeping 'data' for a while now - this is more of a Europe-wide thing.
Did you know they made it illegal (near enough!) to take pictures of policemen too now?!?!?!
Taking photos of police officers could be considered a crimeComment

Who would be stupid enough to do anything illegal or that could get them into trouble over email anyway. It's plaintext in the first place. I couldn't care less that my ISPs are logging this information I guess it all falls back to those that think big brother is constantly watching them, and those that argue what have you got to hideDean Clatworthy - Web Developer/DesignerComment

They are also logging the sites that you visit, VOIP records, etc. I would find that to be concerning. The reason this concerns me is because this is just the beginning. If no one complains, what will be next?
If I visit this site, though im not doing anything illegal, does not mean I want some government entity knowing about it.Comment

Divorce rates will probably sky-rocket when some lawyer wins the rights to check the archive on a spouses request. You know it will come.
I agree with you Dean, I wouldn't care either. I do not see the point of it, as all any terrorist organization will do now is flood uk/eu citizens emails with fake plots, getting many innocent people flagged, and creating so much data to sift through that it will render the initiative useless. It'll probably end up benefiting such organizations.Last edited by DoE; Thu 9 Apr '09, 6:58am.Comment

Wait, is this for every email provider in the world, such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc? Not to mention direct msgs on forums, twitter, facebook, etc ..
Or just the email pop3 account from your ISP? <-- who uses that?
Little troll moment: They record everything in good quality with their data retaining activity and their cctv or whatever .. but you are in trouble if you take a picture in the public where a cop is executing his job (background or not).
Ok, that said: Email is not dead, it's broken. But I think the current and previous generation doesn't really use the ISP pop3.

Floris, according to everything that I have read, it is not limited to just email accounts. It is all internet activity that is being archived. Here in the US, they have been installing black boxes for years at ISPs.
Dean, if you go on an innocent website and for some reason are directed to an illegal site (porn pop-up, pop-under, etc) you would then care. Malware could also direct you to illegal sites. If we end up on one, we would also be logged and most likely reported. I have 2 servers in europe. One in amsterdam and the other in the czech republic. In a way, this affects me because of that.
As far as im concerned, they use the word "terrorism" as an excuse to invade people's privacy. If you like to read, go get the book titled "A Pale White Horse" by William Cooper.
Razasharp, thats insane to make it illegal to take pictures of cops. Amateur pictures and video have helped many innocent people prove police brutality, etc.. New world order anyone?Comment

ISPs in the US are already required to archive email headers. Pretty difficult to trace someone's steps on the World Wide Web unless you are already looking for that specific person's activity. Too many open anonymous proxies to go about it from the back end. Though IPv6 would make this easier as each and every person/device on the net could be assigned their own IP address instead of sharing through unroutable local networks.
Really this isn't really anything new though. It has been going on since the Internet was called DARPANET and owned by the U.S. Military. Your awareness of it is new though. Every server already logs every access, every email and such sent. If you are worried about the intrusion then I really suggest you unplug your computer, use postal mail and contact your legislative representatives to have the laws changed. As it is right now, internet communications are not even allowed in some jurisdictions without external corroborating evidence, contrary to what television shows might have you believe.Translations provided by Google.

When this type and amount of information is stored about us there is the potential of abuse. Do you really think the information won't be abused? You'd be extremely naive if you think it won't ever happen.
Biometric passports, dna databases, monitoring your physical movements, as well as what you're, or daring to, think (internet). Where will it end? Or where is it all heading?Comment

Yeah that would be tragic. A tragic waste - if they were intent on abusing it.
Let's put it another way, with all that info/knowledge - how do you think it could be used? (By *anyone*.)
That should get you thinking along the right lines.Comment
