    Install VLC
Open the file, even if you get no audio or video, go to the file > properties for this video > and it will list exactly which codec you need for audio and video.

Totally agree with Floris here, just making it easier to grab..

I can play it fine with sound in Media Player, but when importing the videos into Movie Maker I get the problem. The programme crashes.

Sounds like a bug. I recommend finding alternative editors that aren't limited to the microsoft drm locked down hollywood formats

Oh, I can use any software but why should I pay for one when it might not work?

Nope, no crash, no error message, please see the screenshot. It's a strange thing what's going on.

I am sure most of them offer free 30 days trial. Windows platform is known for shareware and trials.

I got that and the only thing that fixed windows movie maker was a re-instalation of windows. At some point some files were corrupted that stopped it working/importing anything and the once or twice I got something into it it would not save them.

A little drastic I know but that is how I fixed mine...

I've tried rea-installing windows, the problem still the same.

I've downloaded a couple but they want you to pay before you can really use any feature..

I suppose you have installed divx http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/ and the codec pack, that has solved many a problem for me with regards movies and stuff...

Sounds like Movie Maker .dll or .ax is broken..

Try Start, Run, cmd, regsvr32 lmpgspl.ax
