Buying Domains: com, net, org, and so on...

Let´s say I have:

www.mycompany.com

Should I also get:

www.mycompany.org
www.mycompany.net
www.mycompany.info
www.mycompany.biz

Or doesn´t it matter ? What do you think ?

When I did something like this a few months back, I bought all of the 'premium' domains, it's a good idea and I would recommend doing so.

Yaa, i wouldnt really worry about the rest of the extension domains...

I would consider registering the other domain(s) only if:

1. My site's origianl domain name (due to the site's own success), became a popular brand, where then, I would fear from others trying to compete with me or harm me (spammers, etc.) by registering a typical domain name(s) as mine with a different extension.
2. Launching a commercial project that is well-planned. Then I would register all the main domain name(s) for the site to protect my brand & copyrights.

Otherwise, I would consider this a waste of money.

I would get the .com, .net, and .org. The others I wouldn't bother with.

Hey guys, seems like the rush for the "classic" extensions like .com, .net, .org is over but nowadays theres just so many other ones that are open to us. Looking forward say 5 years, do you guys think that we should invest in some now (e.g .tv) or something along those lines?

I think you should, and consider plural and typing errors too. Especially if you're doing this for a business and want to protect your branding.

For example, although the term 'vbulletin' is trademark jelsoft, I have

http://www.vBulletin-Fans.com/

but vbulletin-fan.com and vbfans.com also work.

Not only does this ensure that people who type it wrong go to the site, but it prevents some lamer from taking the site and benefiting from the "known" url.

In Denmark they are working on making this illegal, to have domain names that are close to a brand name.

I think it's a good idea. At any rate, it's better to reserve the co-sounding domain names for your own resource, than having an issue with an individual who's registered an .org, .net or some other domain copying your first one after your website have gained a global audience. You see, even in the case of trademark-protected names, dealing with a website having a name of your product in its title might be a very complicated issue. Firstly, because there are different trademark registrators/databases in Europe, USA and the other countries, secondly -- because only the Court is capable of enforcing removal of the site decision. To make an example, if "vBulletin" is a legally registered trademark in Europe, it's not going to mean a single thing for the Court somewhere in Vietnam, until there will be a company with the name "Jelsoft", who's already registered the trademark "vBulletin" for that country. In other words, if you want to support some product without registering a firm for it, along with gathering all the needed trademark registration info, you might want to reserve the domain names as it's way easier than spending thousands of dollars after nefarious cybersquatters will try to reap the benefits of duplicating your well-known domain.
