I like PHP quite much but only because I am not used to CGI or ASP. I tried to learn Ruby (Ruby on Rails) but I lost interest after a while.

Do you count Javascript and HTML as programming languages? If so, I like the combination of those best but I also need PHP (to process the data).
    That's the end of that!

CGI is almost dead. ASP has more build-in useful functions, but PHP i believe, is faster.

When it comes to build-in functions (for web projects), Ruby on rails is great. You get a functional weblog using a database up and running in no time.
        That's the end of that!

Umm CGI is a communications protocol, there is a PHP CGI and a Ruby CGI. I can only assume you're talking about Perl which is great to use though a little more difficult for newer users.

The cool thing about Perl is that if you use the Apache mod_perl module you can write your own server modules. I've written our own authentication handler for vBulletin using Perl as well as a few other useful scripts. It certainly beats diving into the C.

I am however an advocate for the right tools for the right job. ASP limits you to Windows so I'm not really a fan of that, but Python, Perl, PHP and Ruby all have their places so use whatever you feel more comfortable with.

I like PHP as most sites seem to be using PHP but I hear ASP is good as well, But as for CGI I think its getting pretty much out dated and I dont see as many using it.

I like PHP the best, I haven't done anything with the rest.

                  Ruby not included? Shame

                  I can't decide if Perl > Python,
                  but PHP > ASP
and I would pick PHP over python and ASP
And I think PHP is just more mature then Ruby
                  so

                  PHP

The only language I've ever used is PHP, so I'll go with that.

                      ASP.NET > *

The OO power and design of C#, views defined through XML, JIT compilation, not a pain in the ass like JSP (and I like Java)...good stuff. My only major gripe is that, for optimal use, you need a Windows server with IIS, and I greatly prefer *Nix for web hosting in general.

ASP != ASP.NET. ASP is Visual Basic garbage. ASP.NET is almost like you're writing a Windows application, not a web application.

                        ey,

PHP ALL the way !!!!!!.ASP is a microsoft technogly and as a Linux / unix freak i don't use the competitor .Seriously you can write cgi into any language out there Perl is just extremely suitable for cgi that's why people refer to cgi when they actually mean perl.In my eyes there are three languages
                        1. Borland / CodeGear Delphi
                        2. PHP
                        3. perl
I don't like microsoft developing language(s) for some reason i don't understand them sorry microsoft

And yet, many IIS users use CGI to allow PHP programming on their sites. Microsoft is also working on a new improved CGI called FastCGI that will be integrated into IIS7. I have encountered quite a few Apache installations that access PHP via CGI as well.

The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a standard protocol for interfacing external application software with an information server, commonly a web server. This allows the server to pass requests from a client web browser to the external application. The web server can then return the output from the application to the web browser.

Of course ASP isn't a programming language either. If someone wanted to they could use Javascript or PHP to script their ASP powered pages. ASP was just one of Microsoft's answers to CGI that existed more readily on linux/unix machines.
