-Pretend your forums are getting hacked
-Pretend your data has been corrupted due to a database crash (just hide some forums/posts and say they are "lost")
-Tell them you aree going to leave the forums or that you sold it

    etc...
    *Insert text here* :)

Last year I used a [you] hack and annouced a new moderator, everyone saw the new moderator was their username.

This year, our site was forced to turn into the complete opposite, should be interesting.

A plugin to post all their attachments upside down (for the thumbnails)
So you can rebuild them on April 2nd.

I came up with a great one yesterday, but then in the end I decided against it. I'm not telling you what it was though as it's something that I can save for another year.

Oh the good old plugin that diverts all users to somewhere else is always a good one too. It's amazing what you can come up with sometimes.

I had a very cool one a few years ago. I used a hack to display the username in a post of whoever was reading the post and I used Scott Pakin's Complaint Generator to generate a nonsense complaint post. Everyone who read it thought it was about them. Of course, I posted under a ficticious username which added to the mystery.

It makes everything mirrored: text and everything is backwards and right-to-left.

Go to Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> Main CSS

Scroll to the very bottom to the Additional CSS Definitions section, and add that code anywhere in the top text field.

I was thinking about displaying a "You have been banned" message to all users... until it redirects to the main page after 15 seconds or so..

I did the RTL thing last year. Changed the entire site to an awful pink color scheme the year before.
But the best one I ever did was announce that the site had been bought out by another website that is notorious for cyber-trolls. People were horrified.

hah i liked the unicode one... but I had 5 skins...
anyway.. we managed to change the suspended page into a termination page and then changed the chmod on the /forums dir to 0......

needless to say I never had so many AIM messages ever... and to say APRIL FOOLS SUCKA! and to see there reaction was hilarous !

                          Thanks all.

You can't do this kind of stuff spontaneously, but in 2005, we put together a long-term prank on our members where the staff slowly increased a dropping of hints that we were not happy with something within staff, how the place is run, etc. Over time, we got more heavy with our hints. Inevitably, the members started worrying when we posted our hatred of other 'certain staffers' in our blogs/livejournals etc. and then word spread to the climatic part of a very high profile admin getting banned for posting something borderline, and from there, various staff stepped down, someone tried to unban him and then he was banned again, etc. etc. The members were furious with how things were managed at the community and we hired new staff (who were actually serious recruitments) to fill in the ranks of those who had left. On AF day we just moved everything back to how it was as if nothing had changed (exception of the two new mods).

Best. Joke. Ever. Some members were angry/upset, some were laughing, some were just stunned, some said they expected it, etc. It was awesome. At one point, a well known member famously stated that there was a "monumental breakdown in staff protocol" going on.

Here's how it all panned out.
