What mark-up do you prefer to use?

This poll is more a question of what you prefer to use when not doing work on your forum....

Wherever I can I set Dreamweaver to XHTML 1.0 Strict because I like to do everything with CSS and keep things really clean, what about you? Do you bother with keeping to a certain mark-up at all?

Yes, UTF-8 too.

There really isn't much reason I've found to not use XHTML 1.0 Strict and UTF-8. XHTML 1.1 is almost identical to XHTML 1.0 Strict, except it should be served with the doctype "application/xhtml+xml" type which, of course, POS IE doesn't support.

XHTML 1.0 Strict is definitely the way to go, although Transitional still has its place... somewhere...

I use UTF-8 as well.

The only thing that bugs me about Strict is that you can't use 'target="_blank"' to open a link in a new window!!!! The 'target' attribute isn't allowed. Is there another way other than Javascript? I don't think using Javascript for links is practical because there are a fair number of people who have it disabled...

There isn't another way.

I'm not sure why they removed the ability to open links in new windows, but I think it's a factor of two things: frames are going away and not allowed at all in XHTML 1.1 (IIRC), and it should be up to the user on how windows are managed, not the designer.

I see with strick the align="center" is not allowed also.

What I don't like about strick is you can't use the target="_blank". Which means all links have to lead away from your site.

You could use:

style="text-align: center;"

Which is a lazy shortcut rather than having to do it through the stylesheet. To centre an actual element like a division rather than just text you have to do that though the stylesheet using margins and setting it's width.

I was just pointing out a naughty shortcut to centre a bit of text whilst keeping the page valid. I wouldn't recommend doing it.

Presumably that just means adding (Will open in a new window) after every link, but it could be part of the reason I guess.
