Just in case anyone didn't follow the link through, the VideoDownloader extension can also grab any embedded media from more sites than just YouTube. I've used it to save some funny videos from iFilm.

Why doesn't YouTube allow users to save videos to their hard drive easily?

They all want more people to link to their pages. If people couldn't save videos they'd have to visit the page again to watch the video. That's my guess.

Actually it does save them locally on your drive.

                Look in \Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

"Replace Username with the user account you/re logged in as"

You will see the adobe .swf files in there.

The last time I tried to save a video like that, the .swf file was only the player. It still streamed the actual video from the servers. Have they changed the way their player works?

I usually get my videos from break.com, but recently found that youtube had much more content..

Copyright infringement is another reason. Sites such as KeepVid, which is a site that allow users to download video off of multimedia sites (e.g., YouTube, Google), is in the middle of the controversy. The assumption is that the videos on these sites are legal; uploaded by the owner. Even if that is the case, still that doesn't mean downloading the content is lawful. As of right now sites, services and software such as KeepVid are available for use.
