external.php - cooler than you might have thought

Self promotion stinks but I have to post it!

I've switched to vB3.6 yesterday and everything went fine.

Since my old homepage was not so nice I came up with something new.
    See the website here: http://www.pagodentreff.de/

Hover over the menu, you'll see a small popup giving you a preview of the forum's content. All this is done with the data from external.php and with the use of Ajax.
I've modified external.php and it now delivers some more content. It was so super easy because of the new way vBulletin generates XML-Files.

Thank you Jelsoft for making such are perfect system whose features sometimes even go beyond a simple forum software!
    That's the end of that!

What exactly does external.php do? You've said you modified it a bit, so what does the stock file do?

It creates generated content that can be used externally. It can create JavaScript, RSS, or XML output that other applications can then use. See the manual for more information.

Normally, external.php generates XML, RSS, JS - files for new threads. I've modified it to also publish information about the latest entry in vBGarage, a random uploaded picture and so on.

This information is parsed by a xml-parser and jTip builds the popup using that data.
            That's the end of that!
