    Sites, Comp Ban?

I've forever been wondering if websites can computer ban you. I've allways wondered this. Big websites like vBulletin Namepros or SitePoint, or all the other sites out there, can they computer ban you?

    Allways wondered. lol.

There isn't an easy way to ban a single computer.

The easiest would be MAC address since it should be unique on the network card, unfortunately there are ways to change it to get around that. Also getting the MAC address isn't easy. Only real way to do it would be some sort of client side application (like java).

You can/t actually ban a computer itself, you can of course ban the MAC address of the NIC on the system, as Scott said.
Also banning your IP address can be affective, but not a great idea, as the IP address/es may rotate, and you could
end up banning a person that you didnt mean to ban, as their IP address could be one that belonged to the person that
          was originally banned..

Problem with MAC is that the only thing the server gets is the previous HOP that the packet passed through. Requiring people to run java when they login wouldn't be appreciated I suspect though I guess its always a possibility.

The MAC address of a NIC can also be changed... with the MAC address alone it isnt 100% accurate...

Any current OS supports spoofing of hardware mac address software wise without having to reboot.

A system can also have multiple nics in it, so banned = .. just plug your rj45 into eth++
