You shouldn't have announced your back up!! You are the only site on the internet that is actually up so when you announced it everyone visited you and you went back down. HAHA just kidding. Levity keeps my spirit up but I don't want to make any enemies.Comment

Well, were back, but with Packet Loss
I guess its better than nothing! I won't be able to sleep tonightComment

packet loss was temporary.
Wluke, I must have misunderstood what you were saying, my bad.
How do you like rackspace? They were a bit pricey for me but I now regret not spending the money, and have probably spent much more with the mickey mouse operations.Comment

I'm not sure if you (dwh) are saying that purely because of hosting or because of today's outage but if it's today's outage: you can be with the best host in the world and if someone like MCI goes down, you're screwed regardless. If you meant hosting, nm.Comment

Tubedogg is correct. MCI controls 2/3rds of the world's Internet Backbone. So it doesn't matter who you host with.
What happened is they lost a substantial router on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States with that problem cascading to a Level3 router before it could be stopped. This is why VDI was down as well as many other NOC's and hosts. VDI was just the most notable because it has discount prices that discount hosting companies like.
Even with this, those NOC's with redundant connections to Qwest, Sprint or ATT were back online relatively quick. Those that weren't needed to wait until hardware could be changed and backups restored.
Rackspace is kind of pricey but they provide good service. Having a server there does require that you know how to maintain the OS though.Translations provided by Google.

While I didn't lose any money from today's outage (I don't run an ecommerce site) I was certainly frustrated, but glad to learn it wasn't my host's fault. They've been real good to us, wouldn't want to start messing up now!Comment
