Originally posted by AWSI'd like to see multi-db support specifically MSSQL.
My bet is we see other products like a portal system before we see vb4. Heck I don't see too much more that can be added to vb3 as far as new features.
I think support of template edits and hacks will probably be allowed in vB4. I'm sure the dev team will figure something out that will allow us to hack our boards and still be able to upgrade without problems (maybe a Plugin or Module system of some sort?).
Multiple database support, as was said before.
That's all I can think of... but if hacks were supported and upgrading was easier for multiple hacks (maybe a Hack Tracking Log-type addition?), then vB would be awesome and we wouldn't have to worry about people who stay on outdated boards anymore.
Ooh ooh, one more thing to add: Support for vB 1.x on the forums

Unless they integrated some sort of Hack Tracking Log/vbHacker hybrid, upgrading and installing hacks would be a lot easier, as would releasing them (since you'd need to write an installer and such).
At this point I'm not sure if it would be the best idea though. Sometimes it's a good thing hacks take some basic knowledge to install. And it is pretty simple to upgrade using file comparison utilities like Beyond Compare.Comment

The htl/vbhacker model would not work imho. Something like the plug-in system for firefox would be a good model, it would defentaly have to allow you to disable the 'hacks' on the fly.
Anthor thought would be skipping the requirement to download a new version for all the bug fixes. I was acully playing with some code the other day altho most of it is still in my head. What im basicly getting at is 'windows update' for vBulletin via the admin cp.
Say there was a bug the spaned init.php, and functions.php. Via the admin cp you could check to see if you where up to date, if not you could download the latest file from jelsoft via your admin cp and have the forum install it for you. This would also give us the added benifit of by-passing our own connections, in other words I would'nt be downloading a new version of vBulletin on 56k, then re-uploading it to a server via ftp. My server would download the file for me, thus saving me time and effort.Comment

and brad, great idea, but I dont think allowing the server to edit files for us would be all that error-proof unless hacks were supported and Jelsoft knows where edits are made (in the files) and what-not

It's kinda like how the Quick Reply made it into vB3

Wasn't the very first/original quick reply hack created by Chen, a vBulletin Team Member?
Surely he wouldn't have minded if it was added to vB3 by default.
Besides, there's only so much you can do with a quick-reply hack. There's a lot more you can do with a store hack.

But think of it like this, vB4 comes with a default Store hack with a set number of actions you can buy. Wouldn't it be a lot easier if people were to release NEW actions rather than whole store hacks?? All people have to do is write the action, submit it to vb.org, and others can d/l the new action to a new folder and the rest will be automatically done (or through an "action upload" process kinda like how the smilies work). I think that would make things a lot easier for many people and we wouldn't have to worry about losing all our actions seeing as how all u have to do is reupload them to your site when you upgrade
EDIT: i just thought of something else that could be added to vB4... full Admin CP skinning that is more in tune with forum styles than just a simple CSS doc

I would prefer an advertising module along with class-based Thread and User API's before including a store hack.Translations provided by Google.

That certainly would be interesting, to say the least. An ad module would be awesome and the next logical step from the subscription model.Comment
