They're generally not meant to know about the engagement ring.

Bling bling engagement ring and a simple wedding ring is best probably.

My dad gave my mom a diamond for their engagement. He worked all summer doing construction on a Mac Donalds between his undergrad and graduate school to pay for the stone. It looks pretty and has definitely kept its value. I think they had is appraised a few years back and it had risen in value. Regardless, if you think it’s what your woman wants, get it. It’s a good investment.

EDIT: My dad gave my mother a diamond, not some cheesy rock. My apologies.

Cubic Zirconia is nice and sparkly, but it has one fundamental problem:

          It's not diamond.

Overcome that one and it's great.

If i found out my man gave me a cz for an engagement ring, i'll be packing his bags and sending back to mommy.

Sorry, the "save two months paycheck" is the traditional way to get an engagement ring, and for that price you SHOULD be able to afford at least a diamond one.

When it comes down to it, isnt it what the ring symbolizes that is more important?

The two-months-pay tradition is long standing and generally accepted.

I agree. The ring isn't what matters, it is the thought that does.

Hmm, I picked out a nice diamond ring for my wife it was about $18,000. She decided it was too much and took it back. She then went to a wholesaler and purchased our whole wedding set for $1500.00. We used the rest of the money to pay for our wedding.

Paying $18,000 dollars for a ring is just plain stupid. I don't even make that much for nearly two years at my old job. But hey, if you got the money to waste, go right ahead.
