using a copied fivelinks template

I want a cutdown version of the fivelinks template for just 1 forum in the board.

I copied the forumdisplay template and the fivelinks template to forumdisplayTHM and fivelinksTHM respectively.
I then amended the fivelinksTHM template by commenting out a link.
I then changed the forum display template field in the THM forum to the new forumdisplayTHM.
In the forumdisplayTHM template I changed $fivelinks to $fivelinksTHM.

But when I refresh the page ALL the fivelinks disappear completely not just the one button as expected.

I mustve missed something????

You can't just put $fivelinksTHM without editing the source code to point to that template.

so where do I edit the source code please?
