    256 colors or 16 bit ?

Does one know a survey which says if surfers are usually have a computer set to 256, 16bit, or 24bits color mode ?

I notice most of the sites are disigned for 16 bit+ display setting, thoughts ?

      Heres what my users use:

      Unknown (1%)
      16 (4bit) (0%)
      256 (8bit) (9%)
      65K (16bit) (55%)
      16M (24bit) (15%)
      16M (32bit) (18%)

      This is like the 640 x 400 vs 800 x 600 debate

      Unknown (1%)
      640x480 (10%)
      800x600 (62%)
      1024x768 (23%)
      1152x864 (0%)
      1280x1024 (0%)
      1600x1200 (0%)

about 10% of my users use 256 colors, and 10% user 640 x 480 resolution... And im sure thoes users who use the 640 x 480 resolution are the same ones that run 256 colors...

I have made the desicion to say "SCREW YOU!" to all thoes users by designing some of my sites at 800x600 and 16bit color, why? Cose if people are too cheap to buy a computer without thoes min standards, then there probly to cheap to buy something of value from my site to make me money good reasoning, eh? lol

      Anyhow, i hope that helps.

        quick fallowup

If most of your users are out of the USA, you may want to design for smaller resolutions and colors, as the states are about 3 years or so above the rest of the world when it comes to computers... and three years ago, most people in the states were still running 640x480 at 256colors on 15" monitors. Now its much more common for new computers to be shiped with 800x600 16+bit color on a 17" monitor.

I don't possibly see how anyone could STAND using their computer at 640x480. It gets me so pissed off when I go to a friends house and see them running in that resolution. When I use a computer thats at 640x480, I think I get claustrophobic (even though I'm never claustrophobic anytime else).

            I couldn't agree more.
800x600 is the bestest I find and the most used.

Okay.. so how come it's hard to find anything below 17" in europe?
5 years ago, i was running 1024x768 on a 15".. and i'm not in the US.. so the question is if it's not the US that's 3+ years behind

We design for a minimum resolution of 800 X 600 and 16 bit color. However, even at 16 bit you will get dithering of the so-called websafe colors in IE 4+ and the only true way to get presentation is to view things in full color mode.
