I got a little bit of progress by copying in the avd_portal template into the mobile template but it only renders the homepage. -
Mobile template for forum only possible
I have used the framework of VBADVANCED to create some pages (thousands) outside of the forum with 4.2.X and everything works great, I should really drop VBAdvanced and just make a basic template but that's another story.
Here is what I would like to do, select mobile template for all forum pages, and using the same switch (assume its a check on browser type then sets a cookie) that allows you to switch back and forth. I would then use a custom mobile template for my non basic pages..

This would be very complex to make work with the basic template I think.

My site is working pretty good, but I am getting feedback that on mobile devices (iPhone) it is cumbersome as the current template that has a main center section and then a side bar on the right shows...
