[vB4] newbie to styles and templates - advice needed

Hi,

I've installed vb4.2.0 a week ago on my server. I've tinkered a little with it and changed the image back and the header background but left it at that before i change to much.
I downloaded the files from the member area to customise my own theme and start from scratch. Problem is outside of the two changes i made myself i haven't a clue where to start from. Is there a reference point or resource somewhere that can help me with the steps to take. When i changed the header colour there were a few options so i messed around for a bit.
As i go i will post more detailed questions with the areas of the style i want to amend, at the moment i'm a big generic with my question.
