Try the doc_background stylevar. Where it says: Background Image enter the url to your image that you want to use as a background.

Same issue, except when I do this nothing happens. If I even try to change the color in the doc_background, nothing happens. I am using and editing the default style for the board. But nothing happens. I am having similar issues changing basically anything having to do with stylevar.

Can you post a screenshot of the doc__background stylevar?

When you're looking at the theme list is there a check in the box on the left? See attachment.
I found in the past if that's not checked then it doesn't save my changes. Especially if that's the only theme on the system.
Personally I'd not play with the default. Create another blank to play with.
