http://www.MovieForums.com - it's a movie site, and as such a black background made a heckuva lot more sense than a white one. What's the remedy? Light greys for the actual forum. Black BGs are okay, but white text wouldn't be.

It's not really the background, but the overall color of the site. You can have a balck background, as long as it's doesn't attrackt more attention then it should. Using a nice colored text, and some bright images can give your site a cozy, calm and cool look.

So it mostly depends on the way you design your site. Colors play an important rule, but rules can be bent

          No

No that's not always the case, but it takes a pro's-pro to do it properly on a colored background.

A good example can be seen at http://www.were-here.com that is an excellent vbullentin form template.

Pretty mcuh all professional sites are light background. It is easier to design around and doesn't look very gloomy.

it is suprising that most digital art sitse actually use black or colored backgrounds. Take 3dpalette or gameart for example.

i think the black ones/dark ones can look the best but it is very hard to get them right and if you don't they look horrible. Were-here is an example of it done perfectly but most people can't do it this well.

                  white backgrounds

it could be also that busy sites prefer white backgrounds because if they are changing images alot, they don't have to worry about the image being surrounded with "snow" those little white pixels that you just can't seem to get rid of that surround your images. if anyone knows how to avoid or nuke those , i'd love to hear. on a white background they don't appear or are difficult to see at worst.

                    Simple...

Design your images on a black background. Then the antialiasing will not cause white snow, but "black ice" (?)
