designing the vB templates, colors (background), etc.?

I'm obviously new to all of this. Is it possible for someone new?

I was able to add subfolders and feel that is an accomplishment.

Side note: After reading further, I've noticed that most of the changes (dramatic ones) are vB skins found on the web. Are these safe, e.g. won't harm performance or anything else? Any input on installation and suggested sites for these skins? It appears much easier than designing.

Please advise...

Oh yeah...
Takes just getting in your mind what you want it to look like then do some experimenting. Check the site in my sig. I did all the theme and styling. Took a bit over about 3 weeks with work and all but so far so good. Looks even better in FireFox
Just don't work off your default theme copy. Take your time and play around like I did. I got mine looking like I want it. Well pretty much.
