Button set making - tips and questions

Was just wondering if anyone more experienced in regard to making up button sets could advise in regard to the following settings required on Photoshop (or other graphics package for that matter):

Resolution (Pixels/Inch)
Transparency dither settings (No transparency dither seems to work best, so far in my experience anyway)
Matte (presumably keep it similar to outline?)
