  • $username in usermessage

I am trying to put dear $username in usermessage email phrase but it's not working.

Why is that? what variable I should use?

It should. What are you doing exactly?

      I went to admincp>phrases&languages>
then I tried to edit usermessage phrase
      I am trying to put
      Dear $username
In the beginning of that message
It's not working, you go and try it

$username is working in my registration welcome email and my admin PM upon registration
but when users email other users there is a notification email that is automatically sent to the recipient
we cannot put $username in that email.

If it's not working then this means that variable is not accessible to that phrase. Changing this requires modifying the code. We cannot officially support code modifications or forums running modified code, however you can try searching or asking for help with this over at www.vbulletin.org.
