$username in usermessage

I am trying to put dear $username in usermessage email phrase but it's not working.

Why is that? what variable I should use?

I went to admincp>phrases&languages>
then I tried to edit usermessage phrase
I am trying to put
Dear $username
In the beginning of that message
It's not working, you go and try it

$username is working in my registration welcome email and my admin PM upon registration
but when users email other users there is a notification email that is automatically sent to the recipient
we cannot put $username in that email.
