    GZip?

    Hi.

I’ve heard a lot of talk about something called Gzip to reduce the bandwidth taken up by vB.
erm… What exactly is this? Where can I get it? What do I do with it once I’ve got it?

    Thanks.

It comes with Linux. Your webhosting company have to install it on their server. If it is on the server, you just have to set the value of GZIP to use on your Vbulletin admin control panel.

What is GZIP? The GZIP zips up the content of your website and sent to you visitor. Your visitor browser then unzips and see the content. This process is transparent to your visitors. For an example, my index.html is 100KB in size. But after GZIP, it is only 30KB. My visitor only download 30KB thus decreasing the bandwidth consumption.

Some hosts will have gzip on automatically (using mod_gzip) so you won't actually have to enabled it from within vBulletin.
