    Win2k SMTP Setup

I've been using an external server for SMTP, but been having problems, so thought I'd activate the default SMTP server within IIS5. However, after setting up relay instructions, etc, to ensure no outside IPs can send mail, I'm getting the error message (in the event log) :

The service could not bind instance 1. The data is the error code.

I was just wondering what causes this? I've had it working previously, but disabled a few months ago. Just tried starting it and it wouldn't start.

    Any ideas why?

Since this is a forum dedicated to vB support, and since most users of vB use *nix. I doubt you will get an answer here....

You might look at a search engine for some help with that error measage.....

Sorry - I should have mentioned - this is entirely for vBulletin.

I've all but given up hope of ever having vBulletin work correctly on my Win2k/IIS5/PHP4.1.0 setup - it still refuses to send email. I use pop3.gradwell.net as my mail server for all the other CGI-type applications on my server (such as ASP or Cold Fusion) which work fine, but for some reason vBulletin doesn't want to send emails - I've outlined these in previous threads and requests to support but no joy thus far...sniff sniff...

So - I'm trying to setup SMTP server locally so it doesn't have to send off to an external SMTP server. And all because the man loves milk tray and vbulletin...

I have been trying for months to get Win2000 to work with vbulletin and SMTP.

I only know 1 person who has got it to work and he doesnt know how - > he did it by accident!

There's a mass of Cold Fusion and ASP developers migrating from these Windows-based platforms to PHP/Linux, wanting to take it one step at a time. It really is important that vBulletin shouldn't be difficult to setup like this.

I have Perl, Cold Fusion and ASP all sending email okay on my server just by specifying the correct SMTP server. Mailtest.php sends mail okay.

It's just bloody annoying as I can' start the integration with vbPortal and Photopost until the system sends email okay. I suspect the answer is to move to a Linux platform. I am an advanced Cold Fusion developer but a crap PHP developer, so I really can't take that step yet.

                  Hello Nuno,

Thankyou so much - those are very clear and easy to follow instructions.

Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same error BUT I suspect this is because my default SMTP server is running on port 30 (rather than 25) as another service is using port 25 and SMTP won't bind.

I'm currently searching my ports to find out what else is running - using Active Ports - but I have specified localhost:30 in my PHP.ini to instruct it to use port 30. Would that make a difference?

                      rawnet

                      try this:

                      Right Click Local Area Connection » Properties » Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) » Properties » Advanced » Options » TCP/IP filtering » Properties

which option do you have selected at TCP Ports?

                        Hi Nuno,

Oooh - never seen this section before. Enable TCP/IP Filtering is currently NOT checked. There is nothing in the TCP Ports column.

I don't know what this means, but does that help?

Okay - yup, that's exactly what I've got but currently I'm not checked. Should I check this like you have in your screenshot?

Could you confirm what this feature does (I'm a bit nervous)?

                            Many thanks,

                            Ross
