not staying logged in

I have many people complaining that they never stay logged in to my forum. They will log in but when the click to post a message, it prompts them to log in. So they log in, post the message but when they return to the fforum, it asks them to log in. Its a big cycle. Any suggestions?

Did your host just upgrade to PHP 4.2.0? If so, you may need to apply the fixes in this announcement:

I'm a little confused. My host is running 4.0.4 Should I still make these changes? In that post it said that the report of people logging in was unconfirmed. So which step do I need to do to make sure it gets fixed?

Before doing anything let's first verify which version of PHP is running. Do you have a phpinfo.php file? If not create one with this content:

Thanks. That verifies the PHP 4.0.4 at least. (Your host really should upgrade to at least 4.1.2 for security issues.)

Do NOT apply the fixes I pointed to before. However I noticed that you set the phpinfo.php file with a .php3 extension. Why did you do this when your server is running PHP 4? Are you also running the .php3 version of vB?

In your Admin CP, what do you have as the settings for 'Cookie Domain' and 'Path to save cookies'?

I have all my files as php3, that's what I was told to do my my host.

I don't know why your host would tell you to run php3 when the server is running PHP 4. Frankly along with running an insecure version of PHP, I'd be concerned about their expertise in this area.

Try changing your Cookie Domain so that it's blank and see if that helps.

I'm having the same problem. It didn't start until about 2 weeks ago when I changed my password, its been fine for six months. A few other people complained that they are having the same problem. You can be logged in, type up your message to post, and then when you go to post it says you're not logged in and then you can't post the message you just typed and it does allow you to see that message :\ So that part sucks lol...

Anyway, it is the php versions possibly? I'm not aware that they upgraded...but I run 2 sets of forums...they were both on 2.2.2 ...they were fine, then the one site starting acting funny. So I upgraded them both to 2.2.5 and the one is ok and the other is not. But they are on 2 different hosts and running different versions of php.

The PHP info for the 4.1.2 server looks ok. What do you have as the settings for 'Cookie Domain' and 'Path to save cookies' in the Admin CP of the forum you're having problems with?

Have you tried logging in with a different browser to see if you get the same problem? Also you might want to try is to manually deleting all the cookies for you domain to see if that clears up the problem.

You might also want to clear the Cookie Domain and leave it blank.
