Email field missing from User CP

    Issue:
In User CP the email entry box is missing. Password change fields are present.

When a user tries to change their password, an error message pops up stating Please complete the required field "Email".
Which is not possible as the field is not visible.

While I have not done any changes to vBulletin code for quite a while, there are a few custom bits in our forum. I do not recall any that would remove or impact the member email field or the ability to change passwords or email.

There is no way I can find for users to edit their email address right now.
The Admin CP still has access to email and passwords fields, it seems to be just the member User CP that is affected.

I do have a backup server that I can check for changes or perhaps swap to, but it is not currently online.

    Server software configuration:
    vB 3.5.4
    Apache v2.0.55
    PHP 4.4.2-1build1
    MySQL 4.1.15-Debian_1ubuntu5-log
    On Mepis linux 6.0

    Any help is appreciated.

What User Profile Fields do you have set up? I suspect one of them is named 'Email' and is as required but not to appear in the User CP.

The only custom field is for "favorite character."

And a note that I SHOULD have placed in the original post: the email field used to show up properly. I am not sure when this changed.

Are you manually registering members with no email address? Have you installed any add-ons? I don't see how any of this could happen with the original vB code.

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Makesure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'SuspectFile Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version:

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

        Next, disable all plugins.

Note: To temporarily disable the plugin system, edit config.php and add this line right under <?php

        define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Then if you still have this problem, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Finally empty your browser cache, close all browser windows then try again. Make sure you change to the new style and view your forums with it. Do you have the same problem?

Thanks for the advice- I am puzzled by the whole thing as well. (Still think vBulletin is the best forum software out there too.)

I will take the steps above this evening and report back.

            I have news:
            I was hacked.

I am not as yet sure how, as I have a locked down firewall and limit connections strictly using iptables.
I also have the server in my home, so local access is controlled.

I have currently put a few band-aids in place but I am going to try to get my backup running with an updated forum db WITHOUT any changes by whoever hacked the system.

            Thank you for your assistance.
